chair piece #1-5, 1996

Participants: Bia Gayotto, Allan DeSouza, Santos Vasquez, Linda Pollack, and Mary Claire Stevens.
This collaborative project examines the innumerous possibilities that emerge when four artists make their own twenty-four-part series of chair arrangements. For "Chair Piece #5" Bia Gayotto and Mary Claire Stevens selected two images from each of the four sets of "Chair Piece #1-4" according to different criteria based on what the images evoked in them: aesthetic, psychological, sociological, and/or sculptural. The eight selected arrangements were then re-arranged and re-photographed with a medium format camera playing with notions of appropriation, collaboration and authorship. In the collection of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) Pasadena, and the Hammer Museum's Grunwald Center for the Graffic Arts, University of California, Los Angeles.
