BIA GAYOTTO
somewhere in between: taipei, 2014
Book 100 pages, 5 ¾ x 5 ¾”
During my residency in Taipei I wondered around trying to connect with the city, documenting the landscape and people going about their daily lives. Presented as diptychs, the book-pages juxtapose cityscapes, architecture, and domestic settings with human activities, including a protest that happened a couple of blocks from where I was living. From March 18 to April 10, 2014 the Sunflower Student Movement protested against Taiwan’s free trade pact with China. Similar to my video installations, the pairing of the page is based on formal and conceptual relationships taking into account dualities such as proximity and distance, presence and absence, public and private, local and global, East and West. The book format further my research on the relationship among people and their environment translating into visual forms feelings of place, culture and identity.
